“It's possible to design something meaningful even when the resources are limited.”
Tell us about yourself, and what brings you to competitions like this.
I'm a 3D artist and founder of an architectural visualisation studio called MASE, based in Vilnius, Lithuania.
What did you design, and what were you trying to communicate?
I tried to design around the light and existing mountains in Vindstad. Having found an interesting relationship between the two, I split the programme into smaller spaces and created a gallery that connects them all together. It is a spine for the entire project, and a key space for anyone visiting the complex.
How did you approach the timeframe, and where did Gendo fit into the process?
Once I had done some site analysis and found an interesting mountainside to design on, I was able to quickly test a few different concepts and settle on a direction. Since I didn't have the entire weekend off, I had to be pragmatic with the design choices and overall process.
Gendo allowed me to iterate within that and quickly understand what works and what does not. It was also extremely helpful in testing the angles from which the project could be presented best, and in examining it from different perspectives, times of day and year.
How has your relationship with Gendo developed?
It was pretty much my first time using it on anything meaningful. Before this, I had only opened it and generated a few images, but never really tested it properly.
What does the recognition mean to you, and what would you do differently next time?
I wish I had more time over the weekend to finalise the design and create more elaborate visuals that explain it all. But as with most competitions, it comes down to being efficient with the resources you have. So an Honourable Mention means a lot, especially knowing how many talented people and teams participated. It's exciting to have your work recognised by such respected jury members, and to know that it's possible to design something meaningful even when the resources are limited.
Anything else you would like to share about GENDO 48?
I want to thank the Gendo team for organising the event, and I hope to see more of these. These competitions challenge us to be both creative and productive in a short amount of time. Until next time.
